Have we
ever thought that, our own success can teach us principles of
being successful?

SUCCESS is a
buzz word in today's fast track world. We are running since morning
till night in search of success. Lot of pages have been written on
this most important ingredient of our self esteem. Lot many
philosophies and ideologies revolve round this but, the truth is,
success is having different definitions for all of us in different
situations of our life.
I read a
book recently where the writer pointed out the important point; We
succeed in every moment. Even rising live in the morning and
getting to bed again after facing the entire day is the success.
So, success
is not having a fixed definition. It varies. In childhood, getting
that win in street game was the success and, scoring first division
in class tenth got to another level of success. Getting a good job,
married to a loving partner, starting a family and...the list is
endless. All these are success.
During this
uphill journey, it is natural to get breathless phases where one
seems to be sliding back, and difficult to continue it. We loose
motivation. We loose the stamina. We feel ungrounded.
We look
towards somebody who can give us the oxygen of motivation, a hand to
hold our hand, a slight push, a jerky pull, we look around.
In this
quest, we often start looking towards our failures. We start
analysing it, lingering with our pain associated with those failures
and, stuck. Either such failures induce the feeling of destruction of
self belief or help us to get the link which triggered that failure.
But, I have often found that, it sucks lot of energy and thus
re-start becomes difficult many times.
It's good to
check the association in such times. People around you, effect your
way of thinking a lot. It's always advisable to be in the association
of the positive thinkers by way of, being with the mentor, coaching, seminars,
books, videos etc.
In this
quest, we often leave behind a most important MOTIVATOR...the 'I',
myself.
We have been
programmed since our childhood that, one must learn from own failures
and, success of others. That is why we are suggested to read the life
stories of the successful people. It is not wrong but, there is a
great charge on interpreting one's own success. Hence, we seldom hear
the success stories of our parents, our real heroes and role models.
Many a times, telling own success is considered as boastful. This
pattern is ingrained deep in mass consciousness. Hence, we want to be
like somebody.
Again, there
is nothing wrong in it. Being inspired by somebody is a good thing.
But, we fail
to inspire ourselves by revisiting our own success stories. In deep
sub-conscious, we are conditioned to see our failures only. Few
occasions are there when we are able to see our own success.
Many books
have been written where one is asked to write our blessings. How
difficult it becomes to write our blessings? How much empty feeling
we get as if nothing is good in life especially when we pass through
that grey phase of life and asked to count on our blessings?
Here, I want
to put on surface, a point of revisiting and learning from own
success too. It gives lot of meaning to self. It improves self
esteem. It improves your relationship with yourself. You start appreciating your own power. And, please note, it is not an
arrogance, boastfulness, self showcasing. It is simply witnessing
your own power. Recognizing the power in you. Honouring your own
behaviour.
It is a
challenge with the human mind to see similarity in two distinct
situations. This is human psychology.
Recently, I
was training a group of budding professionals on professional
behaviour. The topic was on, how to recognize and go beyond the
challenges in profession. How to generate self confidence with your
own power to get over those challenges? There were many points into
this discussion and one was; the own belief of being able to come out
successfully.
Facilitating
this idea, process of finding similarity in two distinct situations
help.
I asked to
recall one incidence from the past where they overcame a situation
which they felt was difficult and they found themselves clueless. All
the participants wrote one incidence each, and those incidences were
overwhelming.
I would like
to quote one incidence of a participant where he faced all the
adversities due to the death of his father in early childhood. He
paid the fee of his engineering by doing all sorts of work and earned
good grades in his course. Now, he got a brake with such a renowned
company to start his career.
Now, can
this situation help him to understand his own potential in future if,
he finds himself unsupported, blocked and clueless? Situations in the
future will present in different shapes and sizes but, the belief on
his own power thorugh his own story can be used to motivate, if, he
finds himself in lack of it.
There are
many situations, where, if, we can see the underlining quality we
exhibited, and could decode that situation, I am sure, nothing can be
a good motivator more than our own realization and power in us.
So,
the key is; identify yourself in past experience, bring out the
outlining strength you exhibited, think on, exercise your think tank
on how current situation can be improved by exhibiting same self
confidence.
Believe! you
are the power...you are empowered to face all that is coming your way
and, draw the newer dimesions of your own wisdom.
Have a week
of self exploration...
